October has been a very exciting month in the Primary Library! The students have been enjoying books about apple picking and fall leaves. This month in the Primary library we are celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month and Halloween! We even hosted an award winning author and illustrator this month! Bethanie Murguia visited NDV and read her new picture book, Do You Believe in Unicorns? The children really enjoyed this special event.

Checking out books!

The Kindergarteners, first graders and second graders have started checking out books in the primary library! This is very exciting for them! Kindergarten and first grade keep their checked out books in the classroom for the week to read and share with their classmates. Second graders are able to bring their checked out books home for the week! The students are enjoying read alouds in the library about school and are looking forward to are next unit about fall!

Library meet and greet

Kindergarten, first and second grade had a great first visit to the the Primary Library! It was nice to see familiar faces and meet all of my new students as well! We discussed library procedures, rules, and expectations, for the school year. The children listened to read alouds about starting a new school year and are looking forward to spending time in the primary library!

Curriculum

Kindergarten, First, and Second grade will have the opportunity to visit the library half a class at a time once a week. They will listen to a stories, check out books, and complete activities. Beginning in second grade they will be able to take home their checked out books for the week. In kindergarten and first grade they will check out books, but leave them in classroom for the week. Students will learn the difference between Fiction and non-fiction and the basics of how the books are ordered on the shelves. Students will learn how to check out books, the importance of taking care of books, and how to return books each week so that they are available to the other students.
