NDV's solid, challenging academic program is supplemented by a wide variety of enrichment programs that encourage our students to explore the arts, athletics, science and technology, language, and community services. Those programs include:

  • Student Government: NDV's student government is a vital part of the campus. Through its governance program, students run meetings and elections, as well as learn the art of public speaking. They host Spirit Week, a time when they learn organizational skills to unite people for a common purpose.
  • City Field Trips: NDV's central, urban location is ideal for field trips to nearby museums, theaters, civic government centers, and special exhibits/events. The rich array of cultural, artistic, and historical sites within a short distance of the school offers the students an expanded learning experience in this, one of the most culturally rich cities in America. NDV is well aware of the benefits that arise from the school's ideal location near the City's dynamic center and takes full advantage of them. The students take field trips to Davies Hall to hear the San Francisco Symphony, A.C.T. productions, the Museum of Modern Art, the Pacific Stock Exchange, City Hall, the Chinese Museum, neighboring French cafes, Yerba Buena Center, and Union Square, to name a few.
  • Big Brother/Sister: Upper grade students take great pride in the opportunity to act as mentors to the lower grade students. Their shared experiences, exchanges, and support are mutually beneficial for both the younger and the older students, strengthening in them a sense of stewardship and collaboration.
  • Story-Telling: Story-telling is a long tradition at NDV, and the school hires a much-revered professional story-teller to visit the classrooms monthly. NDV views this program as an extension of the language arts curriculum. Younger students are enthralled by the professional story-teller's stories, as well as those of the older students who learn the craft of story-telling and share their newly developed talents with the younger students.
  • Lawrence Hall of Science: Each year NDV works with the Lawrence Hall of Science to create a program that supports the school's science curriculum, which includes both study and hands-on experiments in the fully equipped science lab. In addition to the school's robust, interactive science program, the engaging presentations by the scientists from the Lawrence Hall of Science further broaden and ignite the students' interest in science.
  • Sixth Grade Yosemite Trip: Sixth graders participate in an intensive week-long environmental study program in Yosemite, conducted by the Yosemite Institute. This outdoor education experience allows students to reinforce class unity, build friendships, and develop an appreciation and greater understanding of natural habitats.
  • Music Recitals: Twice a year students who are learning an instrument are invited to perform and share their talents in the school's theater/auditorium
  • Art Workshops: NDV's art teacher hosts after-school workshops in a variety of art media for interested students. Additionally, a Spring Art Show, showcasing the artistic wares of all the students, is held annually.
  • Student Success Team: Through this program, faculty and staff work with students with special gifts, as well as those whom they believe are struggling academically or behaviorally. Together with the child's parents, they create ways to support the student's needs and enhance his/her progress.
  • Counseling Programs: NDV is committed to helping children lead emotionally healthy lives and to preparing them for the pressures they face in their day-to-day world. NDV's school counselor serves as an important resource for students and families. The counselor speaks at both staff and parent meetings on subjects relevant to the healthy emotional/social development of children. She has also developed many support programs, one of which is the Life-Skills program for the upper school students. This program brings in experts from outside agencies to make presentations on health issues such as HIV/AIDS awareness or eating disorders. She is also responsible for the Bridges program, a peer support group for children who have suffered a loss either through divorce, death, or separation. In addition, she also oversees the school-wide conflict-resolution program.
  • Academic Decathlon: NDV's academic excellence is demonstrated through its participation in the annual Academic Decathlon of the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. In its competition against 15 other Catholic schools, NDV typically places among the top five finishers, and in a recent competition, NDV took first place overall. The students demonstrate their superior knowledge in logic, mathematics, English, religion, social studies, science, fine arts, and literature.
  • Community Service: A hallmark of the school's mission is its focus on community service as a concrete way to put the Christian value of charitable outreach to work. Students in seventh and eighth grades are required to contribute hours of service to the betterment of their communities and society as a whole. Students devote time and energy to soup kitchens, senior centers, environmental programs, child care centers, and countless other programs. They take great pride in their contributions, emerging from their experiences with greater appreciation and compassion for their fellow men and women.
  • Other Programs: In addition to the various programs noted above, NDV students also participate in other community-based activities, including the Science Fair. NDV students have been strong contestants in this competition, winning awards at the school, city, county, and state level. Students also participate and perform well in regional Geography and Spelling Bees.
