Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Welcome back to NDV and the new school year! I am looking forward to starting school on Thursday and to meeting all of the new fifth graders. This year will be filled with lots of learning and adventure. Fifth grade is a wonderful year for students in which they are challenged to do their very best every day.
Students will be given more responsibility of their own learning as they prepare to enter middle school! Staying organized and establishing strong study skills are a couple of ways that students can be sure to be successful this year. I will do my best to keep this website up to date as the year progresses. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time!
Welcome Kindergarten Families!
I am excited to start this very special year of learning with you and your kindergartener. The classroom is a place where you can find your child taking leaps and bounds in all areas of development. From literacy to social emotional learning; we are growing our minds and hearts! We have a fun-filled year ahead of us, and be sure to check back on the Kindergarten webpage for important updates. You can read all about our curriculum, find the link for classdojo, and get a sneak peek at our field trips. See you soon!
Welcome back! Over the summer updates were made to many of the websites we use in class. Code.org came out with a new Computer Science Fundamentals course and Brainpop added new creative coding projects. Our favorite little robot Meet Edison came out with a new block-based language EdBlocks to use in class or for coding clubs. Common Sense Media added more videos for parents, teachers and students that we can watch for online safety tips. Finally, from the makers of TypingTest.com is new typing program that is ad free for 2017 called TypeTastic.com that we will try out this year for typing practice. Looking forward to a great year!
Over the last two weeks some students came back to NDV for a math review and science enrichment. For the math review, students went over basic foundational skills involving decimals, fractions, proportions, and algebra. One group of students investigated what would happen when people are presented with a calorie food menu vs. an exercise food menu – would they change their order and choose healthier options once they saw how long they would have to exercise? Another group calculated the number of minutes people would have to exercise depending upon the restaurant and the exercise they conducted. The last group of students investigated whether the International Olympic Committee should change racing events so that distances are proportional to athletes heights. Below is an image of each group presenting and sharing their results to the class – they all did an amazing job.
For science enrichment, students learned about roller coasters through creating their own paper roller coasters. We watched videos and discussed the fundamentals of potential energy, kinetic energy, and speed. Once the roller coasters were completed, students conducted a speed experiments to calculate which parts of the coaster were the fastest. Below are a few images of groups with their roller coasters.
